Summer Bible Reading Adventure- August

Hi Everyone!  I can't believe we are almost done with our Summer Bible Reading Adventure.  Just one more month to go!  How are you doing?  Are you reading the Bible everyday with your children?  What a wonderful gift you are giving to them.

Go to Scripture Adventures for a FREE download of a Summer Reading Calendar for August.

And here is my Summer Bible Reading Plan for August printable. Both June, July, and August are on this document. This document is Shared, but if you can't access it, please email me at shondaet@gmail.com.

Be sure to follow me on Facebook for daily verse postings!  Thanks!

You do not have to read the same verses as we do, but the goal is to read at least ONE verse everyday with your children. This last month we read from every book in the Old Testament and Shrade was very interested in all the names of the prophets.  He would ask, "Mommy, who is Nahum?"  It was fun to explore these unusual names and also the great verses that God shared through these prophets.

This month we are finishing up reading a few verses from every book in the Bible and I chose some extra special verses with longer passages.  Some are stories and some are "need to know" passages of Scripture.  Start them when they are young!

Are you new?
You can still join!  Fill out the form below and every month I will email you to see how you did.  I will give a prize to the family that completes the challenge with the most days read and answers an ending survey.   Prize will be a children's Bible. Prize awarded sometime in September.

For those of you who completed the July Bible reading,

please fill out the check in form by August 10.  Thanks, Shonda

PS.  I am thinking of a Fall Challenge Scripture Adventure which will be a little different.  Would you be interested?

Parenting is Heart Work: Teaching Children to Accept No as an Answer

Here we are at session #6- Teaching Children to Accept No as an Answer.  I am so excited to share just a few things from Parenting Is Heart Work by Dr. Scott Turansky and Joanne Miller and our home group session.

Don't you just get frustrated when you say "No" to your child and it ends up in a  downward spiraling argument?  My son is really good at creating "spirited discussions."  Here are a few tips on how to help your child accept No as an answer.

Heart Issues for Children Who Can't Accept No as an Answer:
  • Children need to learn to live within limits.
  • Disappointment provides an opportunity to grieve.
  • Children can learn contentment.
  • Ambition doesn't justify demandingness.
Contentment is being grateful for what you have instead of complaining about what you don't have.
You need to teach your child to balance perseverance.  They need to know when it is appropriate to let go or press on.

3 Demandingness Symptoms:
  1. Arguing- this happens when parents start giving reasons why and kids bring new facts.  The best thing to do is get the complete proposal and think before giving your answer.  Also emphasize that the way they treat you is important.  Help them understand the difference between the issue and the process (how we treat others).
  2. Badgering- This feels like you are being hammered by a woodpecker!  We tend to encourage badgering.  Show them the line that they are not to cross and give them only one opportunity to appeal.  Badgering is rude.  Help your child understand social behaviors.
  3. Whining- Children are very successful with this.  Do not allow it!
Develop a Plan to Teach Contentment:
  • Look for ways to help decrease emotional investment.
  • Use scale of 1-10 to lower intensity.
  • Teach the difference between demand, desire and wish.
  • Encourage them to bring requests in the planning stage.

The Amazing Action Alphabet Review

The See Hear Do Company

The combination of seeing + hearing + doing that = learning has been shown to be the most effective way to learn. Researchers and educators have found that people retain 20% of what they hear, 50% of what they see and hear, and up to 90% of what they see, hear, say, and do. This program is so successful because it uses this combination of all three.

Step 1 Seeing
The child sees the shape of the adorable
animal is the shape of the letter
(visual stimulation).

Step 2 Hearing
The child hears an amusing story and learns
the name and sound of the letter
(auditory stimulation).

Step 3 Doing
The child does a fun action with their body
that produces instant recall for the
sound of the letter
(kinesthetic stimulation).

The Amazing Action Alphabet by Esther Kehl is a unique approach to teach young children letters and sounds.  It is called "See, Hear, Do."  First the child sees the picture of an animal in the shape of a letter, then they hear a story which emphasizes the sound of the letter and there is an action to go along with the story and sound.  The flip book has a picture side facing the child and the story for the parent to read is on the other side.  There is also a snazzy CD which coordinates with the flip chart.  All the stories are sung and the sounds are practiced with the movements.  It is a very comprehensive and amazing program as you see and hear your child imitating the sounds associated with the letters.

I love this teaching product because it covers teaching letters and sounds in a fun and engaging way.  As I read the stories with my 3 year old (who has picked up on the sounds like a snap), I can see my 1 year old trying out the sounds too.  The animal pictures are adorable, colorful and eye-catching.  I highly recommend the CD because you can also play it without showing the pictures.  My kids repeat the sounds along with it as I turn it on while they play.  I daily do several of these animal stories and sounds and I can see how easily my son is finding these sounds in the words that he speaks.  He'll say "Mommy, a says "a" in antelope like in A the Alligator is angry!"  Also, a really fun part of the CD is at the end of each story Esther says an encouraging word that start with the letter like "dynamite"  and my son always repeats the word!  I highly recommend this as a fun way to teach letters and sounds to young children.

Music Notes: Sing Loud! Music for Families by Melissa Green CD Review

Sing Loud! by Melissa Green is a CD that celebrates families through a variety of music genres.  I was very drawn to Melissa's engaging style and use of the "older" tunes.  She brilliantly draws her audience to engage in exciting and fun times with her lyrics and song themes.  Melissa has a unique style which touches young and old hearts and joins them together to embrace love and joy in the sweet moments of life.  My children and I enjoy listening to her friendly voice as she entertains us.  Get ready to bee bop, bounce, and boogie any way want with Melissa's new CD project.

While teaching at Beginnings Nursery School in NYC in 2003, Melissa Green began singing with kids. Encouraged by her success, she honed her guitar skills and ultimately became the school's music and movement specialist. Wishing to make her teaching more meaningful for the students, Melissa began writing and recording songs that grew out of their shared experiences. Now living in Los Angeles, Melissa manages to teach music classes and workshops while also maintaining an active national touring schedule.

Melissa Green's previous albums include Sweet Little One (2011), Round and Round (2008), and Here We Go (2006). In 2008 she released a DVD, Clap, Shake and Roll, and a song-turned-book, The Seahorse Song. Her music is featured on Putumayo's Rock & Roll Playground (2010), and she was a John Lennon Songwriting Contest finalist for "The Seahorse Song" from Here We Go.Parade Tour - A trio made up of Melissa, Lisa Parade and Chris Payne. Learning Activity: Strawberries and Spelling!

Yesterday morning we had strawberries for breakfast and we started doing math problems like 2+2=4 and so on. A few minutes later Shrade said, "I'm going to take some out for my word."  I was curious to see what he was doing.  Then he started spelling his name as he took out one strawberry at a time.  I was amazed!  And I hate to admit this as a teacher, but I'm not sure what to call that except that that I'm finding out that Shrade is a tactile learner.  He went on to spell other words like his sister's name and mommy and daddy.  I would say the letters and he would move the strawberries!  I guess strawberries work for spelling.  Who knew?
