Parenting is Heart Work: Positive Conclusion

Last weekend we went to a parenting seminar and came away with some great tools that we started using that day! I have always struggled with how to end a conflict with my son. I end up just staying mad the rest of the day if something happens and I know that is not good for either of us. So I took away this simple positive conclusion and it has helped me to be calm and for my son to learn in the process. And we use it several times during the day, but he is getting it!

So here it is: Positive Conclusion
After a situation occurs and my son is put in time out and he has time to calm down we ask these three questions.

1. What did you do wrong?  (confession)
2. Why was that wrong?  (heart, behavior)
3. What are you going to do next time?  (equip)
Go ahead and try again!

Give your children a sense of hope and move forward.

This has worked WONDERS with my 3 year old.  I do have to help him answer some of the questions, but that time is so much more calm and productive.  Try it today and tell me how it works for you!

Easter Ideas 2012

Easter is one of my favorite holidays to celebrate because it reminds me of the great gift of salvation that God gave to me as a free gift and I have the privilege of sharing this with my children!

*We started off by making a paper chain to count down to Easter and the last 7 days have Scripture verses from Scripture Adventures "An Easter Adventure."

*We will also be learning the Easter story through the Resurrection Eggs, but I added the egg wraps from "An Easter Adventure" and that made only 10 that corresponded to the Resurrection Eggs I already had.

*Of course, we will be using our Easter Lapbook that I made last year.  Shrade just loved every story that I read in it and all the Bible verses.

*I'm also going to try this idea for Easter Egg Prayers.

*And we will also make these Resurrection Cookies!

*We love cooking so we will make Scripture Cookies too!

*Craft- Make Palm Branches!

*Another fun thing we will do is watch Miss Patty Cake's Easter Eggstravaganza.  Her songs are so easy to sing and very powerful!

*We have 2 Bible Memory verses that we will add to our Bible memory book from Songs for Saplings.
Spring verse- 2 Corinthians 5:17 "Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation."
Easter verse- 1 Corinthians 15:3-4 "Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures.  He was buried and rose again the third day according to the Scriptures."  (Believe it or not, my son learned this last year when he was only 2 years old!)

*We will also sing some traditional Easter Hymns like Christ the Lord is Risen Today!  I will even try to play it on the piano!

I anticipate a really great time of teaching my son the TRUE meaning of Easter this year.  Why don't you join in too!  What ideas do you have?  I would love to know more.

Brightly Beaming Resources Week #21: Wind

Who would have thought we would have so much fun with wind?  We made a pinwheel and a wind sock.  We studied pentagons and incorporated an art project with number 21.  I'm so excited to see all the interesting things I can do with my son and he loves it!   We are also working on fine motor skills like cutting and tracing.  Shrade can actually count to 21 all by himself!  Take a look at what we made this week.

March Monthly Plan

*Bible Verse:  E verse, 1 Peter 1:25 "The word of the Lord endures forever."      Songs for Saplings 
We are making a little book for these verses and we sing them everyday during our "Bible study" time.

*Brightly Beaming Resources:  We are using the Preparatory Curriculum for 2-4 year olds for Shrade.
I  try to blog about what we do for each "weekly" activity.  It takes us   about 2 weeks for each theme.  We will be done with the Prep Curric  when  we reach 26 lessons!  Not many more left.  :)  Then we will start The Letter of the Week Curriculum for preschool age.

We didn't get to these lessons last month, so we will do them this month!

*Brightly Beaming Baby:   Jessna is now 10 months old for the Nursery Age lessons.  Each lesson is  2 weeks long and includes literature, poems,   nursery rhymes, Bible,  speech & vocab, classical music, lullaby,   foreign language  (I'm going to do some Spanish and sign language), baby   game, exercise  and baby massage.  I love these lessons because they   give me a focus  on what I can do to entertain my baby!  It's fun and she   loves it.  I  hope to do more things with her!  I've been very slack with Jessna, but I do as much as I can.  Keeping up with 2 kids is more than I can handle most days.

We are going to do some fun activities with The Gingerbread Man with ideas from Totally Tots!  They featured this all last month, so now that I have the ideas I will run with it. (Will try to do these activities this month)

*Fun With Colors
Every month this year I will pick a different color to focus on for one week.  For March I chose GREEN!  I will be using ideas from Teach Your Tot and Totline 123 Colors : Color Day Activities for Young Children (1-2-3 Series: Ages 3-6) by Jean Warren.


*Daily Music time: Songs from Music Notes and CD's we get at the library. 

*Pre-Math Activities
 I'll be using this book Totline 123 Math: Pre-Math Activities for Working With Young Children (1-2-3 Series, Math: Ages 3-6) by Jean Warren.  I'll try to blog about some of the activities that we do.

 What Shrade can do: 3 years of age
-When asking a question to mommy and daddy, begin with "May I please...?"
-wash hands
-taking off clothes and put in laundry basket
-putting clothes on
-drinking from cup
-throw away garbage/recycling
-clean up messes on the floor
-put dishes in the sink
-help put dishes away from the dishwasher
-put clothes in the washer (I don't have him do this often)
-Help mama with the baby
-Cooking with mama
-spelling his name
-potty trained!

 What we are working on:
-clean up toys- say "yes, mama" when asked without whining or crying- still working on this
-brushing teeth (we need to work on this)
-wash face and hands and brush hair
