Boy Mom by Monica Swanson is a book geared for moms of boys so that moms can give their sons what they most need. Monica gently guides moms to look at the big picture and then breaks it down into areas that give suggestions in ways to teach our sons. Each chapter is sprinkled with stories of her own life, books that have impacted her and excellent ideas. There are also discussion questions at the end of each chapter. She dives into areas for character, technology, spiritual growth, influences, work ethic, relationships and much more. And there also is a link to a printable that is outlined in the book for various topics such as how to share the gospel, identity in Christ, boy approved food and dinner conversation starters, just to name a few. 

I have to be honest, as I was reading this book I began to feel overwhelmed with what area to focus on for my son. They all seem so vital! But as I read, I realized that I will just take it one step at a time and keep this book by my side so I can refer to it often. I am thankful for Monica's ministry and how she has used her knowledge and life experience to help other boy moms in their quest to raise their sons in the way of the Lord.

The Lifegiving Parent by Clay and Sally Clarkson Book Review

The Lifegiving Parent by Clay and Sally Clarkson is a much anticipated addition to round out the trio of books by Sally and her daughter Sarah in The Lifegiving Home and The Lifegiving Table.  The Lifegiving Parent is the long awaited book that Clay had been working on since before their ministry for parents began.  There is one main thread through this book and it is that lifegiving parenting starts with the parents sharing the life of Christ in their home and to their children.  The bulk of the book are the eight Heartbeats for Parental Lifegiving.  Clay begins each chapter with a mixture of family stories and Bible truths.  He then breaks down the heartbeat into practical ways to live out in the family.  Sally rounds out the chapter with one of her lifegiving "momoirs."  And the Lifegiving ParenTips reviews the lessons shared in the chapter with an action step.  

This book was full of excellent parenting principles that I hope to live in my home so I can be a life giving parent.  They said that they only scratched the surface in sharing the eight "heartbeats" but I feel they encompass a lot of what God wants parents to develop in their hearts and homes.  One of my favorite chapters was Strengthening Your Child's Faith.  I know that walking my faith journey is helping my children learn about their faith journey.  That is the key to strengthening their faith which is broken down by Clay into belief, trust, assurance, allegiance and life.  But one of my favorite quotes that I want to share with my children is "You are God's...You are loved...You are good."  Being a life giving parent is lot of work, but with God I know He will lead and guide me.  I underlined about half of this book, but this quote defines what I think life giving parenting is for me:  "It's all about helping them find and follow the life of God."

Parents Rising by Arlene Pellicane Book Review AND Giveaway!

Parents Rising is Arlene Pellicane's newest release.  This book breaks down eight strategies for raising kids who love God, respect authority and value what's right.  Arlene's honest and sometimes amusing family stories give a glimpse of how to apply these strategies to everyday life.  Each chapter begins with a Bible verse and a short story.  From there Arlene uses her research to share some startling statistics for the breakdown of the strategies in modern day culture.  She weaves other author quotes and solid suggestions for implementing these ideas into the family.  At the end of each chapter there is a question, a prayer and an action point.  And interwoven in her writing she continually encourages parents to rise up.  She also gives tips for single moms and blended families. There are also discussion questions at the end of the book for group meetings.  Some of the topics covered are entertainment, boundaries, the role of the parent, daily Bible time and prayer, the priority of marriage, spending time with kids and getting them ready for life beyond the family home.  

Arlene's latest book is another one to read and devour.  She directly addresses the needs of today's family with love, encouragement and plenty of Biblical wisdom.  Arlene is candid and witty with a generous dose of common sense and a purposeful edict for parents to subscribe to God's values for raising kids today.  The best part is the Parents Rising Manifesto at the end of the book which challenges parents to read it weekly and includes all the strategies from the book to keep in mind through daily life.  I plan to read through each chapter again and evaluate where I need to rise up and read the manifesto in my morning devotions.  I love this book and I hope you will too.

{Why} Motherhood Matters by September McCarthy

I am so glad I was chosen to review this book by September McCarthy about motherhood. I have felt so often that I'm a failure and what I do is so mundane and it doesn't really matter.  I can't believe that I think and feel these things because I love God so much and I want to follow and obey Him.  But I get overwhelmed and frustrated and I begin to go down the wrong path.  This book was a compilation of many different thoughts for moms who feel these things.  

September takes her experience as a mom of 10 and her passion to encourage moms and wrote {Why}Motherhood Matters because it does, much more than we can ever think or imagine.  I felt like I was sitting across the table from this sweet mom as she told me many stories of her motherhood, lessons she learned, ideas to inspire my motherhood, ways to love to my kids and husband and myself.  But most of all, to keep my mind and heart focused on Jesus who gives me the strength and grace to be the mom He created me to be.  

Throughout the book September inserts specific Bible verses that pertain to the topic in the chapter, practical steps to take toward the the topic, questions to think about, her own parenting principle and a special prayer.  Each chapter had a different theme.  My favorites were: Why Overwhelmed Does Not Have to be Your Middle Name, Why Most of Motherhood Will be Spent on our Knees, Why a Tired Mom Can be the Most Influential Mom and Why It's OK to Say No to Your Children.  But one of my favorites is shared in the video below read by another author (Wendy Speake who wrote Triggers) who shares Why The Yelling Mom Can Find Hope and Help.  Click HERE to see video.

This is a book I will pick up and read a chapter from when I need encouragement or wisdom.  Motherhood is much harder and more emotionally, physically and spiritually draining than I ever thought.  But it is the sacrifice that God has called me to.  As September says, "Motherhood is an incredible labor of love- and in the scope of eternity, it matters more than you know."  I will not give up and I will stay strong in the Lord because I know it matters for eternity.

Discipline That Connects With Your Child's Heart by Jim and Lynne Jackson Book Review and Giveaway!

Discipline That Connects With Your Child's Heart by Jim and Lynne Jackson is a unique approach to parenting that focuses on connection with discipline.  "As parents become calmer grounded in peace and purpose, they become far better positioned to influence their children toward wiser responses and decisions."  But how do parents do this?  The Jacksons have developed a framework that focuses on four Biblical principles that help parents connect to their children's hearts during discipline.  There are four actions and four messages.  First, build the Foundation with the message "You are SAFE with me."  Second, Connect to your child with "You are LOVED no matter what."  Third, Coach your child with "You are CALLED and CAPABLE." And lastly, Correct with "You are RESPONSIBLE for your actions." The authors have developed this diagram from their own experience as parents and have shared them as parent educators.  These beautiful messages are the focus of this book.  Each section of Discipline That Connects With Your Child's Heart explores each of these messages.  These ideas are revolutionary in making positive and lasting changes in family life.  There are lots of practical stories and examples that present the information in a relevant way.  Throughout the chapters there is a section titled My Response with several questions for reflection.  These questions are helpful in uncovering some of the problems parents may be experiencing.  And the book ends with an extensive Appendix for Wisdom for Special Challenges like chores, poor listening, morning and bedtime routines, defiance, lying and many more subjects. This book is an excellent tool for parents to use and apply to help family life become what they desire. 



I discovered Jim and Lynne Jackson a few years ago listening to a podcast where they were guests.  I was absolutely enthralled with their message.  It gave me hope and peace in the midst of my feelings of failure as a parent on those often rough days.  I was so excited to finally find something that made sense to me and gave me proactive steps toward creating the family life I long for. What resonated with me most was providing the foundation of connection before making the correction the focus in my discipline.   I was thrilled to be able to read their book and find real and lasting ways to apply what I'm learning.  Jim and Lynne have a heart for parents and kids and connected families and they truly have delivered a book that will be a strong voice for many parents.  I am honored to share this book with you.

Hal Leonard's Piano For Kids by Jennifer Linn Book Review

Hal Leonard's Piano for Kids is a beginner's guide step by step instruction for piano by Jennifer Linn.  This book has piano study materials and an access code for audio tracks to the songs in the book. 

The book begins with introducing different types of pianos, how to sit, good hand position, fingering and the keyboard.  The first lesson is about rhythm and introducing quarter notes and rests and then half notes.  The next lessons start teaching the notes by letters.  There are pictures of the keyboard and step by step instructions on how to play the lesson.  Some of the music is classical, some from Disney movies and other favorites kids may know.  And with each lesson there is a downloadable audio track available to play along with during the lesson. 

I think this would be a great first book for a new pianist who is able to read and  can follow written instructions.   This is ideal for a parent and child to do together as well.  I was really pleased to see so many familiar tunes and I was surprised to see a favorite that I learned by ear called "Heart and Soul."  I think kids will really enjoy the energy and simple ways this book teaches piano.

The second book in the devotional series of The Talk (focuses on sex education for families) by Luke and Trisha Gilkerson is Changes: 7 Lessons to Make Sense of Puberty which is for ages 8-12.  This book covers how Jesus grew, Puberty, Hormones, What to expect for boys and girls, Girl Changes, Boy Changes, and the Goodness of Sexual Attraction.  The introduction states how important that we discuss these issues in our families before they learn it from somewhere else.

These devotions focus on the foundation of building blocks of biblical sexual values in our kids.  One of things that is very important is to be open and available for these conversations to take place.  It's a great idea to make regular family devotions for your family and at some point you can include these lessons during that time.  In this way you are establishing that bond of open and honest conversations. 

 

They also address why it's not too soon to talk about these things as well as this is an ongoing conversation.  There is no need to fear, but it's so important that we share the biblical values for the gift God has given to us.  We want our kids to get excited for these upcoming changes and also to know how to handle the emotional and physical changes that occur during this season of life.  Your kids need to know this information, and what better way than to use a well laid out plan like this curriculum.

 

 

My thoughts:   I really appreciate the conversations outlined in this book that will make it work to share about this sensitive topic.  It's easy to brush it off, but I know that it's better that my kids learn about puberty from me and also with a great resource beside me.  I would feel very comfortable using this.  Yes, it does cover anatomy, but it's necessary for children to understand these things so they feel prepared to face this new season of life. 

 

I don't know if I was fully prepared for my changing body.  It was a very uncertain time in my life and I didn't feel like talking about this at all.  Now that I'm a parent, I've started these conversations with my kids who are just 4 and 6.  They are not so curious right now, but soon I will be able to use the first book in this series called The Talk: 7 Lessons to Introduce Your Child to Biblical Sexuality.  Then later as they get a bit older I can use Changes as outlined in this blog post.  I'm very excited that I have these resources to help my kids understand all that God has planned for their bodies.

Look Inside the Time of Jesus is a hardback illustrated book of the life of Jesus with colorful pictures and lift-the-flaps.  This book has authentic scenes from Bible times.  Children will see towns, seashore, farm, banquet room, temple, Roman trial and the garden where Jesus was resurrected.  Spread throughout the book are lift-the-flaps where children can explore beyond the story.  There is a short paragraph sharing the story for the page and several flaps to lift as well as objects that are labeled.  This will create some great discussion as you share this book together with your child.

Write Through the Bible Proverbs 3:1-26 from Intoxicated on Life

 

 

 

One of the things I'm looking forward to most is teaching my children from the Bible.  I am already doing that, but with writing and memorizing with the materials at Intoxicated on Life, I see a great method to make this a solid foundation of God's Word in their hearts.

 

The newest resource in Write Through the Bible is Proverbs 3:1-26.  It's a full year of writing practice focusing on God's Word.  This covers memory, handwriting, vocabulary and dictation.  There are a few days of copy work, then a day of looking up vocabulary and another day of dictation.  There are also review days to copy several verses at once.

What an amazing passage of Scripture to memorize and know that is so full of wisdom and guidance for young boys and girls!  I am so excited that I will be able to use this with my children.

Laying the Foundation (A family study of the Apostle's Creed) by Luke Gilkerson of Intoxicated on Life Review

 

 

 

Laying the Foundation  (A family study of the Apostle's Creed) by Luke Gilkerson is a phrase by phrase look at a very old creed Christians used to recite at the beginning of the third century.  The Apostle's Creed is one of the three main catechisms for Christians as endorsed by Martin Luther.  This creed has value for Christian families to give essentials of the faith, a confessional, valuing tradition, a personal faith and connects to the Christian heritage.

The Bible study can be 30 days or 30 weeks (one lesson a week) and is suggested to be done as both and to memorize this creed as a family.  Each lesson has an opening thought, a Scripture reading, explanation of the passage as well as the part of the creed being unpacked, questions for discussion and a prayer.  Each lesson is very simple, yet really engages the kids to think deeply and make a lasting impression on them as they learn about God.

There are many part of the creed that might be confusing or hard to understand, but Luke does an excellent job of explaining and interpreting what might cause some unrest. 

I really enjoyed the layout of the study and thought that it was a great way to make a very intimidating passage very manageable for young minds.  There is no doubt that memorizing a text like this can be hard if not understood in the proper context.  With 30 lessons, there is definitely a way for a child to understand know exactly what is being said and why.  I was very impressed with the amount of research and how it was presented.  This would be a great Bible study to do together as a family as you grow closer to God and to each other.

I really like the author's male perspective in this book for raising girls.  John Croyle has had the incredible opportunity to be around hundreds of girls and show them how God values them above all else.  He challenged me to think beyond what I would normally teach my daughter, but to embrace a high calling and truly equip my daughter for who God made her to be.

Motherhood Realized: An Inspiring Anthology for the Hardest Job You'll Ever Love by Power of Moms Book Review

 

Motherhood Realized is a gift for every mother who desires to be the best mother they can, but know that motherhood comes with a price: sacrifice.  The stories in this book are real. They will make you laugh, cry, think, ponder and pursue your children in new and different ways.  This book was written by several authors who have published articles on Power of Moms which is a great community of moms coming together for support and encouragement.   Each chapter ends with a question and a challenge.  This book is a must read and something you will want to read over and over again.  You will identify with each story in some way and find yourself being drawn further in your motherhood journey to know that you are not alone and that you are mother that God has planned exactly for your kids.

 

This book is exactly what I need for this time in my motherhood season.  I was so moved by these stories and they really made me think and realize that motherhood is not just about me, but about my children and about other mothers who are there to support me along the way.  This is a book that will always be on my bookshelf when I want a positive word or a story to cry with or a laugh to enjoy.

The Talk by Luke Gilkerson from The Intoxicated Life Book Review

One of the most complicated and awkward conversations I can think of to have with my kids is about sex.  Growing up I didn't have a very good foundation in learning about this important area and I know my parents were embarrassed and honestly didn't know how to broach the subject without feeling some anxiety.  And I was definitely not taught at an early age so that it would be natural and positive as I entered my teen years.

Bumper Wipe Clean Activities by Juliet David Book Review

Bumper Wipe Clean Activities is a 69 page spiral bound book with wipe off pages.  The book features activities for stories from the Bible in the Old and New Testament.  The colorful illustrations instantly grab a child's attention and the activities are simple and easy to follow as well as engaging and will keep young ones busy at home or on long car rides.  There is drawing, dot to dot, mazes, matching, tracing, same/different, hidden pictures and more.  These are easy for any child to do even if they do not read.  The child will enjoy doing the activities, wiping them off and doing them again!  And they will also learn Bible stories too.  This is a great little book to have on hand for extra practice or a fun time filler.

Bible Stories Painting Book 2 by Juliet David is a unique book with the paints already included (brush needed).  There are 16 story pictures from the Old and New Testament.  There are 2 painting palettes located in the front and back cover.  Each page can be torn out for easier painting.  Just wet a brush, wipe on the paint palette and color the picture.  Kids will enjoy trying this new way of painting.  My son loves water colors and was very excited to pick out a picture to paint.  There are several different shades of each color and your child will enjoy choosing the colors and making their story page come alive!  I can see how this book can provide hours of fun.  It is also easy to tote around.  We will be bringing it on our upcoming vacation.

The Two-Minute Drill to Manhood by John Croyle Book Review and Giveaway!!

The Two-Minute Drill to Manhood by John Croyle is the work of a passionate and purposeful father.  John, who played football as an All-American defensive end at the University of Alabama and now runs the Big Oak Boys Ranch, is a father of two incredible children.  Both his son and daughter witness their father living out what he says.  In this book he unpacks seven principles that start with the letters of MANHOOD.  M is for Master, A is for ask and listen, N is for never compromise, H is for handle your business, O is for one purpose, O is for one body and D is for don't ever, ever, ever give up.  He makes some very bold, but life-changing statements about the values that parents must be teaching their children.  He explains that there is a "two minute drill" in life that happens at about 16 years of age and the job of the parents is to prepare their children for these crucial moments.  He shares practical, doable examples from his own life.  He is candid, honest and also compassionate for single parents.  His message is clear, have a game plan and carry it out.

I really enjoyed the stories John told in this book especially about how he taught the kids.  He shared mistakes and successes.  His game plan is very solid and he made several statements that are big neon signs to me about what I should be doing as a parent.  He shared many nuggets of wisdom starting with "The greatest gift you can give to your child is..."  He really challenged me to up my game and seek God for everything I need to be and do as a parent.  I am thankful for the counsel provided in this book and I highly recommend it for parents of both boys and girls.
