Laurie Berkner has just released "The Dance Remixes" of 14 of her most beloved songs for kids.  Laurie realized that many of her fans had now grown into teens and she wanted to update her songs to reflect the new sounds of her award winning favorites.  She remixes her songs into Electronic Dance Music (EDM).  Kids will enjoy the upbeat sounds including Latin-flavored and some old time fiddle music.  Laurie shines in this new album because of her timeless appeal. 

 

 

My kids and I first heard Laurie Berkner on CD at a library story time singing "We Are the Dinosaurs."  It has been so fun to see her develop her songs into great dance music.  She is funny, talented and has her own style.  We recommend this new CD for your dance parties.

"Every Day's Your Birthday" by Miss Nina and the Jumping Jacks CD Review

 

One of our FAVORITE music artists in Miss Nina!  We have watched her weekly videos since my kids were very little and they still love her.  She is personal, talented and funny.  She has a wide range of songs with motions, special guests and her trademark cotton candy pink Daisy rock acoustic guitar. 

 

We fell in love with Miss Nina and one of her previous album's  Sha Doo Be Doop (which I reviewed on my blog).  Her lively songs are super fun to listen to and dance to.

 

Her new album Every Day's Your Birthday is set to release on May 6 (my daughter's 5 year birthday).    This album is a great mix styles from pop rock of the 60's and 70's, some rap, jazz and country.  Who can pull off all these different musical interests and create a spectacular album for kids (and parents too)?  Miss Nina, of course! 

 

Every Day's Your Birthday is all about music and movement.  And Miss Nina says, "Why not make every day a great day?"  I agree!  When you listen to Miss Nina you will agree too.  Our favorites songs are My Freeze Dance (doo wop pop dance), Up and Down and Silly Wheels on the Bus.  The dynamics between the instrumental band and Nina's friendly singing voice is a sure crowd pleaser.

My review:

 

Laurie Berkner was one of the first artist CD's I picked up at the library when I was a new mom.  I absolutely fell in love with her style.  She provides unique tunes with easy lyrics that the kids can repeat and remember.  Her guitar strumming and melodic voice memorizes my young children and myself too.  Laurie's songs engage listeners to jump right in the experience she provides through the stories of her songs.  She takes you down a walk by the river, looking for a birthday cake, collecting bottle caps and other fun items, trying to call someone on the telephone that doesn't answer, the mess that kids are,  reading with a pretend book and other crazy things that interest kids.  She is family friendly and knows how to make children explore their world in intentional ways and create meaningful relationships.  I highly recommend Laurie's new CD that is a combination of some of her best songs.

The Apple Tree and the Honey Bee by the Bari Koral Rock Band Music CD Review

You know it's a good CD when you hear your kids singing the songs even when it's not playing on the CD player!  That's why we love the Bari Koral Family Rock Band's new album The Apple Tree and the Honey Bee.  Starting off with a Dancing Bear and moving on down in a Big Truck, being chased by a bee, growing an apple tree, having a birthday, hanging with sisters and brothers, giving hugs and enjoying a roller coaster.  Did you have as much fun as we did??  These songs are simple, singable and a great way for young ones to dance around the room and get some energy flowing.  There are many different kinds of music like pop, jazz, soul and country.  What a talented group of musicians.  We are so happy to play along with the Bari Koral Family Rock Band.

NEW YORK -- Here's the buzz:  One of the most popular kids'/family recording artists on the scene today, Bari Koral, takes an adventurous leap forward with the Bari Koral Family Rock Band's fourth album, The Apple Tree & The Honey Bee, set for release in May.

Brad Jones, described by music journalist Rick Clark as "one of the most self-directed and disciplined guys I know in music," has worked with everyone from Matthew Sweet, Jill Sobule, Marshall Crenshaw and Ron Sexsmith to Justin Townes Earle, Yo La Tengo, Over the Rhine, Chuck Prophet, and Josh Rouse.  Jones produced Josh Rouse's highly lauded Nashville and 1972.

The Apple Tree & The Honey Bee leads off with "Dancing Bear," a rocking, good-times tune with a great dance beat, which features Bari Koral "trading fours" with Dred Scott's excellent bass guitar work.  Bari wrote "Big Truck" à la Johnny Cash, and Dan Cohen's twangy guitars combine with Bari's impressive country vocals to give the song an authentic "on the road" feel.  Shifting gears with 18-wheel precision, Bari turns the corner on the next song, "Birthday," a poppy anthem of love and security.  Other highlights include the New Orleans flavor of "Roller Coaster," spiced with vocal "whees" that are sure to delight, and the humorous, two-beat "Back to the Farm," which is guaranteed to get kids moving.

In a Heartbeat by Laura Doherty (CD Music Review)

My Review:
Sweet, folksy, bouncy and fun.  This little album has 13 entertaining songs for young ones that even older ones will enjoy too.  Laura's down to earth voice and catchy tunes will have you dancing around the room and learning about fish, drums, heartbeats, butterflies and more.  She plays with passion and liveliness that inspires young ones to experience new sounds and images.  You will hear many different instruments that tell unique stories.  This album is sure to be played often for families to enjoy together.

Sukey's Circle Volume 3 Mini Shows in English and Spanish DVD Review

My review:

There is nothing more exciting for me to see than when my little daughter watches Sukey and starts singing along.  Sukey has a magical presence onscreen that mesmerizes little eyes and minds.  Her short songs, stories and activities are perfect for engaging young children and teaching many skills and concepts.  Sukey's giggle is infectious.  She is having fun and it overflows to her audience.  She invites children to copy her movements and play along with her.  She interacts with her audience and explores many simple movements, songs and stories.  We have fallen in love with Sukey, Sunny and Tick Tock.  Sukey's playroom is adorable and my kids would love to play with her there. Sukey also has beautiful dance movements and her sweet nature is charming!  A special bonus feature of this DVD is that the 15 episodes are in English and Spanish.  Children will learn so much from Sukey!

Let's All Make a Circle with Meredith LeVande DVD Review and Giveaway!!

 

A few years ago I was privileged to review Meredith LeVande's CD What Are the Odds?  This DVD brings all those songs to life!  Meredith has a very engaging smile, voice and story telling by song.  Each video is very unique.  Meredith plays the guitar, drums and shares the stage with a wonderful group of children as well as some eye-catching scenery.  The music draws kids to interact by copying the movements of what they see on the DVD.  Kids learn so much about social skills, gross motor movements, fruits and vegetables, wheels, bubbles, silly animals,funny knock-knock jokes and more!  My kids enjoy spinning around the room and watching all the fun that is happening in each video. I can even hear them singing the songs when the DVD is not even playing.  They are very easy to catch on to and remember!   This is a great DVD to pull out for those rainy days and playdates for kids to get up, moving and being silly!

What I really enjoyed the most was the Teaching Guide attached to the cover.  Each of the songs has a great teaching point for your kids to get more enjoyment, learning and growth all while having fun and being goofy.  There are some great early learning skills attached to the songs on this DVD.  So pick it up today and start your journey of imagination and wonder!

With a full schedule as a lecturer at USC, Ilana Melmed never envisioned that she would find herself producing a children's CD.  However, inspired by her children and grandchildren, and motivated by a strong desire to share her passion for classical music with families, Ilana took on the roles of producer, singer, and lyricist for Whatever I Want To Be, recruiting a superlative cast of talent to participate in the project, including Emmy Award winner Stephen Cohn as production supervisor and vocal arranger. Music Notes: Sha Doo Be Doop by Miss Nina CD Review (+ FREE download)

My review: The minute I popped in this CD I was moving and dancing!  This whole album was a lot of fun and Miss Nina incorporated some classics like the Alphabet song, Brown Bear, Brown Bear and Wild Things and made her own preschool versions that had the listener tuning in for over the top enjoyment!  Miss Nina has a fabulous range of vocals and uses innovative ways to draw kids to experience old favorites in new ways. And best of all she teaches SO much through each song.  She gets kids interested in life and everyday tasks like washing hands, saying good bye and riding in the car with vigor and excitement.   I was quite impressed with her album and whenever we need a song to brighten our day, we just pop in this CD and dance away.  There are fast songs and slow songs, but all songs are interactive.  Miss Nina has a heart for the young, but she quickly captures the "older"crowd too!  Thanks, Miss Nina!!

BOW sweet BOW Review and Giveaway!!

When I had my little girl almost 2 years ago I couldn't imagine all the differences between having a daughter and a son.  Whereas, my little boy had his hair cut fairly early, we have not yet cut my daughter's hair.  It is now growing out into a pretty silky blond and I can actually put it up in ponytails.  Not only that, I can dress up her hair with cute bows and hair bands!

From cupcakes to gingerbread, this holiday season wraps up a very "sweet" year for Bari Koral.  Anna and the Cupcakes, Bari's second full-length studio CD for kids and familes, was honored this year with the prestigious NAPPA Gold and Parents' Choice Recommended awards.  Anna blends a cool mix of country, blues, and folk (all original, save a cover of the Avett Brothers' "Kick Drum Heart").  People Magazine dubbed the album one of the year's coolest for kids.  Rave reviews for Bari's music rolled in from media outlets nationwide, including Yahoo! Are you ready to party?  Steve Pierson gives a great soundtrack for a party with friends.  His music is easy to move to and the lyrics are fun and contain lots of humor.  Kids of all ages will enjoy this album because each song has a great message with a catchy tune.  Jambo gives the best of blues for kids and the joy of music with rock and roll highlights.  Put this CD on, crank up the volume and be prepared to boogie, sway, laugh and kick your heels to some feel-good music!

Guitar virtuoso and soulful blues singer Steve Pierson has spent most of his adult life in Los Angeles.  His music career centered on the local blues band scene in and around LA before he made the move to join Grammy winner and former Wings guitar virtuoso Laurence Juber in forming their own blues-rock band, Blues Head.  Steve put in ten years playing festivals and clubs around the country with Blues Head until the birth of his daughter, Lucy, in 2002.  Upon Lucy's arrival, Steve came off the road and began to focus on writing music for film and television.  He has since become a successful and prolific composer/producer of music for television, commercials, and independent films.

Jambo strikes a high profile on the Los Angeles family music scene, performing regularly throughout the region at such venues as the Skirball Center for the Arts, The Grammy Museum, and The Geffen Playhouse.  The band also tours nationally, with recent appearances at the Austin City Limits Festival and the Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores, Alabama.

The Preschool of Rock's "Everything Makes a Sound" by Michael Napolitano CD Review

There is nothing more exciting to me than a distinctively different sound that is both fascinating and inviting.  Michael Napolitano is a master at creating a very original soundtrack that embodies so many unique noises and sounds blending together to form body-moving music.  This album is sure to be on the top play list of any preschooler.  Both of my kids just jump up and down when I put this CD in.  I was very impressed with the "Safari Song," I felt like we were in the jungle.  And my son really liked the "Cupcake Song" when he could run, run, run and stop!  Michael also teaches classes for kids and parents and he is very engaging and exciting.   The song "Everything Makes a Sound" is composed of house keys, a book, compressed air, a paper towel, voices, whistles, tape, scratched glass, a bouncy ball, a glass jug, wrenches, clapping hands, an electric drill, knocking on wood, a chain and rice.  No traditional instruments were used in this song.  You will love this CD!!

Music Notes: Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights- What a Zoo and I'm a Rock Star CD Reviews (+ free music download)

 Get ready for a rockin' good time with Joanie Leeds and the Nightlights!  Oh, my goodness!  Joanie has an amazing voice and writes super cool lyrics and tunes.  And not only that, she is highly creative.  On What a Zoo, Joanie wrote a song called Happy As a Clam with over 40 "animal-isms" like "You're as happy as a clam; you're a puppy in love, you lucky duck."  It was truly the highlight of the album for me.  What a Zoo also sports several other animal songs with Joanie's funky twist that not only is fun, but educational too.  And after each song in her lyrics insert she gives a little background and an activity idea to go along with the song.
 I'm A Rock Star is another jazzed up musical adventure where Joanie reaches out to kids in their interests and creates an atmosphere of rock star imagination.  She is not shy is expressing herself and encourages kids to step out and try new things.  I really enjoyed the parent/teacher tips in the lyrics insert.  Joanie's songs make you want to move, shake and just relax in silly ways.  What a fun way to spend an afternoon- listening and dancing to Joanie's music.
Interview with Joanie:

1. Describe your music and lyric writing process.

I almost always think of a theme or title that I want to write about and then try to think about lyrics from a child's perspective. Sometimes a story will click in my head and the song will honestly write itself. With a theme in mind, I usually write the lyrics and music at the exact same time, which is a bit strange. It just happens! I know many songwriters write the words then set it to music but I have this strange ability to not write a song for months but when I get motivated I'll sit down and write 5 in a day. Some of my tunes lately are assignments that have worked in my favor. For example, in the spring I played in at the San Jose Children's Discovery Museum and they were having Bicycle Safety Week.
I thought to myself 'Hmm, I have no songs about bikes...I'll write one" and from that came an awesome tune I penned called Helmet. My new song Falling came from meeting a music placement agent who was looking for tunes about Autumn for a commercial. I cooked that up in about 20 min and was in the studio the next day. Sadly, it didn't make it in the commercial, but I hope to put it on my upcoming album and who knows what 'back to school ad' may discover it in the future!

2. What is your earliest music memory?

With the help of 70's-80's technology, I have some old cassette tapes of me singing The Wheels on the Bus and tunes of the like as a little 1 year old. My mom has them in storage but we listened to them about a decade ago and it was wild! They also have pictures of me singing "Tomorrow" at my 2 year old birthday party in front of everyone. I grabbed the party performers mic and went for it. They should have known what my future would bring from that day, and honestly, I think they did!

3. What is your favorite part about performing your music?

I used to perform for grownups in bars and looking back, I realize that I was terrified for a decade. I never really felt comfortable in my own skin. I would get so nervous I would get panic attacks before I took the stage and it took a few songs to calm down. While I loved singing, it was just not the right venue for me. Now, performing for kids, it a totally different feeling. I just get up there with no nerves and a big smile on my face ready to make families dance. Its a perfect fit and I'm so glad I fell into it the way I did. You hear people use the word "calling" and I honestly feel like I found mine, especially when I get off stage and realize that I've brought so much joy to children and their families. It's such a huge feeling. I have the best job in the whole world!

4. What project are you working on right now?

Well, that's a very big question these days! I am getting married in one month and with out a doubt, that's a project in and of itself. Along with wedding planning I have been writing songs for an album I hope to start after the new year. I would love to release it before the summer but I don't have any set dates as of now. I have about 10 songs written and I love where they are going. I'd like to write a few more so there is a selection for my producer to choose from when I start pre-production but it's a very good start considering I have bride-brain!

NEW YORK -- Multi-award-winning independent children's musician Joanie Leeds loves the fall!  In fact, Joanie's so happy that her favorite time of year is here, she's written a new song -- "Falling" -- in celebration of the season, and she's offering it as a free download to her fans.

Says Joanie, "'Falling' is a tune about a season I didn't know very well growing up in Miami, Florida.  Now that I'm a Northern girl, I find that I adore the changing of the seasons, and autumn is so beautiful that I had to write about falling in love with the crunching leaves under my feet and the changing colors over my head. My new album is in the middle of being written, so here is something to hold ya'll over for a few months.  Enjoy!"
